During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
